Details of the VIA Rail Ocean derailment
According to Noovo Info, the train’s two locomotives derailed at about 1:30 a.m. after the collision. The provincial police force Sûreté du Québec said the trucks had been left too close to the rails. The truck drivers suffered minor injuries, while passengers and crew were not hurt, a Sûreté du Québec spokeswoman told the CBC. (See Le Journal de Québec.)
Evacuation, heat loss, and service impacts
With the train losing heat, passengers were taken to a local community center. (See TVA CIMT-CHAU.) The collision also damaged the track and appeared to be delaying the westbound Ocean, which was reported stopped at Riviere-Du-Loup, about 21 kilometers (13 miles) from the derailment location.
Investigation
The accident site is about 180 kilometers (112 miles) northeast of Quebec City. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating the incident.
