In a statement published by Sydney Metro, Sydney Metro said the outcome reflects the collaborative work behind the project, delivered with the Crows Nest Design Consortium (CNDC). CNDC was made up of lead consultants SMEC and partners Woods Bagot, Robert Bird Group, Norman Disney Young and Oculus.

How the Sydney Metro station design award was won?

The ENR Global Best Projects judges acknowledged a station designed to meet passenger needs now while also serving the community in the future, as outlined by Engineering News-Record (ENR). Sydney Metro cited the project team’s joint approach as a key factor in the outcome.

Design details: platform pavers and station artwork

One distinctive element is the platform pavers, inspired by historical pavers uncovered on the site during excavation. They use a geometric pattern intended to reflect the heritage of the local area.

Another highlight is Ceramic Wall Relief, an artwork designed by Esther Stewart. The work comprises a series of nine handmade tile-collage panels that frame and embellish the walls at both station entrances. Its colours, patterns and motifs reference north Sydney’s once booming brick and tile industries, alongside the area’s urban history of artisanal fabrication.

Passenger use, opening date and travel times

Crows Nest station welcomes around 9,700 passengers each weekday. It is one of six Sydney Metro stations—along with new platforms at Central and Sydenham—that opened in Sydney’s north and under the CBD in August 2024.

Sydney Metro lists travel times from Crows Nest of four minutes to Chatswood, 18 minutes to Sydenham and 28 minutes to Castle Hill.
