The US Department of Transportation is committing $24 million to launch a new Washington Union Station redevelopment plan built around a public-private partnership for future expansion.

$24 Million Starts Replacement Planning

On July 24, 2026, the department announced⁠ that the additional funding will support development of the partnership rather than a defined construction package. The model is intended to shape capacity expansion, passenger improvements and a faster delivery strategy.

The announcement begins a replacement planning process after DOT abandoned the expansion concept covered by the Final Environmental Impact Statement and Record of Decision⁠ signed in March 2024. The agency has not provided a timetable for the new plan or identified the source of the $24 million.

Union Station Redevelopment Corporation CEO Doug Carr said the funding would allow the partners to seek industry ideas and develop a clear, fundable path for the station’s future. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the partnership is intended to deliver upgrades while improving the station’s long-term financial performance.

Immediate Repairs Remain Separately Funded

A separate $465.8 million program⁠ remains focused on immediate work at the existing station. Funded through the Northeast Corridor Partnership Program under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021, it covers replacement of the aging roof, repairs to the parking garage and station interior, and near-term passenger-area improvements.

That package also includes work on the passenger concourse, Amtrak lounge, ticketing experience, security and family-friendly infrastructure. The new $24 million allocation therefore starts a planning track alongside funded state-of-good-repair work; it does not establish a construction budget for the future expansion.

Operations Study Will Shape Construction Planning

The Federal Railroad Administration will conduct a service optimization study as Union Station Redevelopment Corporation and Amtrak assess design and construction approaches intended to attract private investment. The study will examine how to maximize passenger benefits and keep rail operations running smoothly during construction.

DOT said the approach mirrors the redevelopment process for New York Penn Station. For Washington, however, the final scope, schedule and investment structure remain open. The current announcement marks the start of redevelopment planning, not the start of construction.
