Fire crews received the call at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday and struggled for over an hour to reach the isolated bridge between Mineral and Morton. By 8:45 p.m., railroad staff found the structure nearly completely burned.

On Friday, the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that they have identified a suspect linked to the fire, although authorities have not disclosed the individual’s name.

The Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad had counted on the bridge—rebuilt just 20 years ago—as a key component in its expansion strategy. Leaders say the bridge supported not just trains but regional economic ambitions.

“That span represented more than tracks,” the railroad stated. “It carried the weight of our future, local industry hopes, and community growth.”

In recent years, the organization has pushed hard to revitalize operations. It transported record-breaking passenger numbers and restored more track than ever before, building momentum with dedication and effort.

But the fire halted that momentum. To recover, the railroad has turned to the community for help. A GoFundMe campaign aims to raise funds to cover insurance deductibles, legal fees, and recovery planning costs.

“We’ve worked relentlessly,” the railroad added. “If you believe in what we’re building—or if this fire outrages you—please help us rebuild. This place matters.”

The bridge linked new opportunities for freight and tourism across the region. Without it, plans to reopen service to Morton face major delays, and the economic ripple effects are already growing.

Community support will be vital in the months ahead. The railroad’s recovery fund is already live, with donations directly supporting efforts to rebuild and restore service.
