Separately, as Railfan reported, the U.S. Surface Transportation Board declined Metra’s request to intervene. In addition, late last year, Metra asked the regulator to negotiate terms. At the same time, it sought a final agreement between the parties. Still, the March 13 decision said it was too early.

Meanwhile, the board gave Metra and UP two more months to negotiate. Also, the agency said it would then consider whether to intervene.
Union Pacific’s former role on the commuter lines
Separately, Union Pacific had operated the Waukegan, Harvard/McHenry, and Elburn lines since 1995. In addition, it took control of Chicago & North Western that year. Meanwhile, Metra assumed those operating responsibilities in 2025, as previously covered by Railway Supply. Still, the BNSF Line is the only service directly run by a freight railroad.
