South Shore Line Monon Corridor starts passenger service

On March 31, South Shore Line Monon Corridor began passenger service. The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District started operations on the extension. It links Chicago with the Indiana communities of Hammond, Munster and Dyer.

The Monon Corridor is the line’s first branch line. A South Shore Line press release used that description. It adds to the Lakeshore Corridor. That route connects Chicago and South Bend, Indiana.

SSL officials said the new route provides additional service in Lake County, Indiana. They said it serves rapidly growing areas there. The commuter railroad also implemented a new train schedule. It added nearly 30 new weekday and weekend options, as Railway Supply noted. The $945 million design-build project added 8 miles of track. It also added four new stations to the South Shore Line.

According to a press release from HDR, the company provided program management. It also provided environmental, engineering and grant support services for the project.
