Sierra Northern Railway repainted locomotive design and purpose
Unit No. 250 was prepared as a commemorative paint scheme celebrating the nation’s milestone. The railroad has framed the unit as a nod to railroading’s place in the country’s fabric.
EMD GP7 locomotive history and rebuild into a genset
Built in the early 1950s as an EMD GP7 locomotive for the Santa Fe Railroad, the unit later served the Burlington Northern Railroad before being purchased by the Yolo Shortline Railroad. In 2003, Yolo Shortline Railroad and Sierra Railroad Co. merged to become Sierra Northern Railway.
Company officials said the locomotive was rebuilt in 2014 by Sierra Northern’s in-house shop into a Railpower RP20BD genset, a point also noted by Railway Age.
“Railroads and railroading are part of our country’s fabric, and we are proud to celebrate its enduring legacy,” Sierra Northern CEO Ken Beard said in a press release. More images of the locomotive have also been shared by Trains.com.
Where Sierra Northern Railway operates in California?
Sierra Northern operates 75 miles of tracks in Northern California and 30 miles of track in Southern California. It interchanges with BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Railroad.
