The crash occurred at about 10.15am on Tuesday, January 20. The car’s driver and one passenger were killed.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) — which manages the interstate standard-gauge freight network where the incident occurred — said it was working closely with the train operator to provide support, according to an ARTC statement.

The train driver and two other staff members were the only occupants of the train at the time of the collision. ARTC said the team on board were not physically injured and were assisting police with enquiries.

Investigation and rail safety response after the collision

ARTC said it was also working with Victoria Police, emergency services and rail safety authorities. It added that the Office of the Chief Investigator, Transport Safety, and the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) were notified following the incident, and ONRSR representatives attended the scene.

“ARTC extends its deepest condolences to their families, loved ones and communities at this difficult time,” the organisation said.
