The company said the site represents an investment of about 220 million USD. By 2038, it is projected to add roughly 1.6 billion USD to the state’s economy.

Investment, jobs and local suppliers

The new facility reflects broader efforts to expand domestic transport manufacturing. It also reflects broader efforts to support rail infrastructure. Also, it is expected to help supply new rolling stock for services. That includes services operated by Amtrak.

Deputy U.S. Transportation Secretary Steve Bradbury said:

Siemens Mobility’s investment in North Carolina manufacturing underscores the importance of rebuilding America’s transportation infrastructure here at home. The impact of this facility will be felt for decades, supporting passenger rail services like Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor and helping deliver modern, reliable trains for travellers nationwide.

The plant currently employs around 300 workers. That total is expected to rise to more than 500 by 2028. In addition, Siemens Mobility said production at the site will use parts from more than 75 suppliers. Those suppliers are based in North Carolina.

Siemens Mobility manufacturing facility and Amtrak Airo coaches

The facility will produce passenger coaches for Amtrak’s Airo fleet. That fleet is intended to operate across 17 states. It is intended to operate on the East Coast and in the Pacific Northwest. Separately, the first deliveries of those new coaches are due to start later this year.

David Fink, Administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration, said:

Siemens Mobility’s investment is a clear signal of industry confidence in this President’s ability to clear hurdles that held American manufacturing back under the last administration. These spectacular American-made coach vehicles will not only reshore American jobs but also help bring about the Golden Age of Rail Travel.
