Maintenance depot in Madrid is the focus of Renfe’s new EUR 43 million tender. The facility is planned in Móstoles, in the metropolitan area of the Spanish capital. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Maintenance depot in Madrid for Line C-5
The project is part of the modernization of Line C-5. It belongs to the Cercanías Madrid suburban network. As Renfe notes, the new depot is intended to support Stadler Rail’s high-capacity trains. The current infrastructure must be adapted for them.
In practice, the project combines a new depot at Móstoles-El Soto. It also includes infrastructure adaptation for the Stadler fleet on Line C-5.

The planned facility at Móstoles-El Soto has a budget of EUR 42.7 million. Its construction period is 18 months. It is meant to support the operation of Line C-5. It will handle the new Stadler trains as they are gradually introduced. Also, this investment is part of the broader modernization of the line.
The depot will expand storage and maintenance capacity in the Madrid area. Also, it will shorten turnaround times. That is expected to improve operating efficiency. It is also expected to increase rolling stock availability on one of the busiest lines in the network.

The technical scheme includes three indoor maintenance tracks. Each one is 200 metres long. It also includes an annex building for offices and auxiliary functions. Outside, the facility is to have three tracks with technical platforms. It will also have one washing line. Another track will be fitted with a lathe for wheel maintenance.
Later this year, Madrid will begin receiving the first units of the new Stadler-built trains. They are the 453 series. They stand out for a high level of reliability. They also have capacity for more than 500 passengers. In addition, they offer full accessibility and improved spaces for carrying bicycles.
Renfe workshop plan and Line C-5 modernization
With this maintenance facility in Madrid, Renfe is taking a new step. It is renewing its network of workshops. Meanwhile, the project will be incorporated into the 2025–2030 Comprehensive Workshop and Maintenance Plan. Under it, the company is adapting its infrastructure to new rail service requirements.
Renfe’s investment programme for 2025–2030 is worth more than EUR one billion. It covers new workshop construction. In addition, it covers the modernization of existing facilities. This is part of the renewal of the train fleet used for public services. It falls under the Madrid suburban network plan.
At the same time, the operator is implementing a maintenance model based on new technology. It includes real-time monitoring, automated track inspections and digital tools. These are being used to anticipate faults, streamline processes and cut response times.
Separately, Line C-5 is part of the Cercanías Madrid network. It remains one of the most heavily used rail routes in Spain. As Railway Pro reported, annual demand is around 72 million passengers. That represents nearly 40% of all trips on the Madrid suburban system.
Its modernization is backed by a broader investment programme valued at EUR 1.35 billion. The plan covers 28 projects. They are aimed at optimizing and modernizing both infrastructure and rolling stock. Adif is managing about EUR 650 million for infrastructure. Renfe is responsible for roughly EUR 700 million for trains and operations.
Meanwhile, alternative transport options are also planned. They are meant to reduce the impact of railway works on passengers. They are also to be implemented alongside the railway projects.
