InnoTrans 2026 opening ceremony theme and schedule

The ceremony is expected to frame the wider programme. It will do so through global trends in transport technology. It is scheduled for 22 September. The official InnoTrans Opening Ceremony page lists the time as 10.00 am to 11.30 am.

Several technology areas are expected to stand out. InnoTrans has identified artificial intelligence and automation among them. AI-based tools for scheduling, maintenance and operations continue to develop. Autonomous public transport systems are also drawing attention.

Technology trends expected in Berlin

Cybersecurity is also expected to feature prominently. Rail systems are becoming more digitally connected. Concerns over resilience against cyber threats continue to grow.

Meanwhile, digitalisation and data use form another part of the picture. Integrated data platforms and real-time analytics are shaping operational efficiency and the passenger experience.

Separately, advanced manufacturing is also likely to feature. Robotics and 3D printing are becoming more relevant in maintenance work and component production. These priorities build on earlier editions. Digital transformation and sustainability were presented there as central concerns. The focus is now moving towards implementation and scaling.

Another area receiving renewed attention in 2026 is night trains. Across Europe, interest in overnight rail travel has grown. Environmental considerations and changing passenger preferences are driving that trend. Exhibitors are expected to showcase updated carriage designs, service models and comfort-focused innovations.

Anniversary context and the 2024 reference point

In addition, the ceremony will mark 30 years since the first InnoTrans edition. It will welcome 1,000 guests from around the world for the anniversary celebration. A personal invitation will be required.

As in previous editions, speakers are expected to come from government, industry and academia. Earlier opening sessions have combined policy discussion with technical insight in panel formats.

In 2024, the opening ceremony focused on artificial intelligence in rail. It ran under the theme “From Hype to Reality – AI in the Mobility Sector”. Among the industry figures taking part were Henri Poupart-Lafarge, Javier Martínez Ojinaga and Michael Peter. This line-up was outlined in the InnoTrans event preview. Also, the discussion reflected broad agreement that

AI could improve efficiency. It could also optimise capacity and support predictive maintenance. At the same time, the panel highlighted concerns about energy consumption, appropriate use cases and regulatory challenges in Europe.
