CANADA: A CPKC train derailment at Regina yard involved two locomotives and about 13 cars, while derailed container cars struck an empty potash consist on an adjacent track.

Two locomotives and 13 cars leave the rails

The incident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, as the intermodal train moved through CPKC’s yard in Regina, Saskatchewan. CPKC said two locomotives and approximately 13 cars were involved.

Derailed container cars then hit the stationary potash train on the neighboring track. Images from the scene showed several covered hopper cars lying on their sides.

In a statement reported by 980 CJME, CPKC said no one was injured and there was no risk to public safety. Trains reported that CPKC’s statement to CBC said no hazardous materials were involved.

Cause of Regina derailment remains under investigation

CPKC said it is investigating what caused the derailment. Crews remained at the yard on Saturday as cleanup work began, according to the local report.

No preliminary cause, estimated damage figure or timeline for completing the cleanup was included in the statements available on August 3. The reports also did not specify whether the incident disrupted other movements through the Regina yard.

Intermodal trains carry containers that can transfer between rail and road, while covered hoppers commonly transport bulk commodities such as potash. The reports did not identify the load status of the containers involved in this incident.
