The volume of rail freight transportation in Ukraine in May 2023 increased by almost 20%. During this period, 11.49 million tons of cargo were transported, representing a 19.2% growth compared to May 2022, according to the railway journal Railway Supply, citing Rail.insider.

Reduced freight rail transportation

The average daily loading of cargo also shows positive dynamics with a growth of 15.7% to 352.8 thousand tons.

In May 2023, domestic freight transportation increased by 36.5% to 7.17 million tons, while the volume of exports decreased by 2% due to the blocking of Russia’s “grain corridor,” resulting in a 29% reduction in grain exports (to 806.9 thousand tons).

Fasteners manufactured for the railway industry

Imported freight transportation in May 2023 increased by 7% (to 483.4 thousand tons), while transit transportation had a small volume of 47 thousand tons.

In terms of cargo categories, the most popular in May 2023 were construction materials with a volume of 2.5 million tons, coal – 2.22 million tons, iron and manganese ore – 1.96 million tons, grain and milling products – 1.83 million tons, as well as ferrous metals – 816.3 thousand tons.

The largest growth was observed in the transportation of construction materials with over 70% increase compared to May 2022.

As previously reported, in April, Ukraine’s railway also transported a record volume of black metals for export since the start of the full-scale invasion.
