Progress Rail locomotive order: 100 Tier 4 units for CPKC
27.01.2026
Progress Rail locomotive order details were confirmed after the company reached an agreement with Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) to deliver 100 new freight locomotives, as reported by InkFreeNews.com.

The locomotives are slated for production at Progress Rail’s Muncie facility, and the commitment expands an initial 70-unit order.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The purchase is part of CPKC’s multi-year $800 million investment in American manufacturing, a broader fleet-renewal push also covered by Railway Supply. Within that same effort, CPKC also funded the purchase of 100 more Tier 4 locomotives in 2025—units that were produced in Texas by Wabtec.
Progress Rail locomotive order ties to CPKC’s fleet renewal
CPKC Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Mark Redd said the investment supports the railroad’s locomotive renewal program. He said the purchase is meant to accommodate future growth, improve fleet reliability, and decrease emissions as CPKC serves customers and the North American economy.
Progress Rail says the latest generation of EMD Tier 4 locomotives is focused on improved reliability, serviceability, and fuel efficiency. The company estimates a 5–7% fuel-economy improvement compared with first-generation Tier 4 units, while continuing to meet EPA Tier 4 emissions standards without after-treatment.
Talos energy management system and operating performance
The new locomotives will incorporate Progress Rail’s Talos energy management system, which the company describes in its Talos™ train automation overview as an AI-enabled platform designed to optimize train handling and in-train forces. In the announcement, Progress Rail says Talos is certified by the EPA to deliver a 12.3% efficiency gain—described as an industry-leading benchmark for fuel savings and reduced emissions.
Progress Rail also says Talos has logged more than four million miles without a break-in-two, which it presented as a new standard in safety across the rail industry.
SD70ACe-T4 specifications for longer, heavier trains
Progress Rail President and CEO John Newman said the updated Tier 4 platform follows years of investment to enhance reliability and fuel efficiency, as well as months of testing by CPKC in some of North America’s most rugged operating environments. He said the locomotives are prepared to deliver the performance expected by Class I railroad customers.
The SD70ACe-T4 is rated at 4,500 brake horsepower and up to 200,000 lbs. of starting tractive effort. With those SD70ACe-T4 specifications, Progress Rail positions the model as enabling railroads to move longer, heavier trains with fewer locomotives.
