CPKC locomotive fleet renewal: US$800m US-made Tier 4 buys
23.01.2026
CPKC locomotive fleet renewal is moving ahead under a multi-year plan that commits more than US$800 million to American manufacturing, as outlined in a CPKC statement.

This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
In 2025, the railway completed the acquisition of 100 Tier 4 locomotives from Wabtec, built at the company’s Texas facility.
It has also confirmed a Progress Rail locomotive order for a further 30 Tier 4 locomotives to be manufactured in Muncie, Indiana, a step also noted by Railway Supply. Alongside that purchase, CPKC expects delivery of 70 additional Wabtec units in 2026.

Those 2026 deliveries include Wabtec Evolution Series ET44AC Tier 4 locomotives, with the first two of the 70 expected in January. Later in the year, Progress Rail is scheduled to deliver 30 EMD SD70ACe-T4 Tier 4 locomotives, part of a broader order totaling 65 units, as reported by Railway-News.
Mark Redd, CPKC Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, said the additional purchases of new Tier 4 locomotives “proudly made in the USA” continue the company’s US$800 million investment in American manufacturing capacity. He added that CPKC is investing in its road locomotive fleet for growth and to maintain what it calls industry-leading service for customers and the North American economy, supported by a fleet with improved reliability and fuel efficiency.
CPKC said the acquisitions align with its previously announced multi-year capital plan to modernise its locomotive fleet while maintaining service levels across North America.
