CANADA: The eight additional light rail vehicles Edmonton has ordered from Hyundai Rotem aren’t news on their own — Railway Supply reported the same 32-to-40-car expansion last week — but the manufacturer’s explanation of why the order landed in Edmonton at all is worth a closer look.

Hyundai Rotem confirmed the exercised contract option to Seoul Economic Daily on Aug. 15, attributing the additional order specifically to the cars’ cold-weather engineering. The core facts — the expansion from 32 to 40 high-floor cars, the replacement of 37 Siemens U2 vehicles that have run for more than 45 years, and 2029–2030 delivery — were already reported. A car engineered for -40°C

The new high-floor cars, which run up to 80 km/h, were custom-built to withstand temperatures as low as -40°C — a spec Hyundai Rotem calls the deciding factor, given Edmonton’s winters, which routinely drop below -30°C. The vehicles add a forward collision warning system and announcement volume that adjusts automatically to ambient noise. Seoul Economic Daily reports the original February 2026 contract for 32 cars at 320 billion won (about $231 million); Railway Supply’s earlier coverage, citing International Railway Journal, put the same deal at $220 million — a discrepancy the sources do not reconcile, likely reflecting different currency-conversion dates.

One supplier, every line

With this order, Hyundai Rotem becomes the sole light rail vehicle supplier for all of Edmonton’s LRT lines, following a 2021 contract for 46 low-floor trams now being delivered to Valley Line West. The company’s Canadian track record dates to 2005, when it delivered automated guideway transit cars for Vancouver International Airport ahead of schedule, and it received a plaque from Canadian transit authorities for its role supporting the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
