Port Authority Completes $430M PATH Forward Program with Historic May Upgrades
02.05.2026
PATH service enhancements will bring May changes to the PATH rail network. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced the changes. They cover train service, fare payment choices and rider-facing upgrades across the century-plus-old system. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

For riders, the changes are focused on weekend line operation. Also, they cover fare payment options and station access equipment. Those items were already identified in the authority’s update.
PATH service enhancements and PATH Forward
The measures follow the completion of PATH Forward. That 430 million USD Port Authority programme was intended to modernise PATH infrastructure. In addition, the work included nearly three miles of new track. It also included replacement of ageing switching equipment. The programme covered station upgrades and improvements to PATH rail cars.
Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole said:
The return of seven-day service on all four PATH lines for the first time in nearly a quarter-century is a major milestone for our riders and our region.
These significant improvements were only made possible thanks to our riders’ patience and support during the PATH Forward program. That focused and sustained investment, in infrastructure and in our riders, is what makes milestones like this possible.
Weekend service changes and fare updates
On 4 May, the single ride fare will rise to 3.25 USD. The Port Authority Board of Commissioners had authorised the increase in December 2025. It was a 0.25 USD increase.
Further weekend service changes will take effect from 17 May. Direct Journal Square–33 St trains will run on weekends. Their operating window will be 10:00 to 21:00. Meanwhile, direct Hoboken–World Trade Center weekend service will also resume. It will return for the first time in nearly twenty-five years.
Weekend frequency changes
Separately, PATH will begin dedicated weekend service on the Hoboken–33 St line. Journal Square–33 St and Hoboken–33 St services will run every 10 minutes. Hoboken–World Trade Center trains will operate every 20 minutes.
In addition, enhancements will seek to increase frequencies during peak periods and late-night hours. Friday night trains will run every 20 minutes until 02:00. That will match Saturday night service levels.
All four PATH lines will operate seven days a week. That will be the first time since 2001. The move forms part of sustained efforts to improve weekend and off-peak service.
Some service improvements were already introduced in March 2026. On the Journal Square–33 St line via Hoboken, weekend wait times were cut. They fell from 20 minutes to 10 minutes. That reduction applied between 10:00 and 21:00. At the same time, weekday morning peak trains also became more frequent. Between Hoboken and World Trade Center, they began arriving every six minutes. The previous interval had been every eight minutes.
TAPP Card migration and fare gate pilot
From 4 May, unlimited passes will be available on the new TAPP Card. They will cover 1-, 7- and 30-day options. Also, paper SingleRide tickets will be available from TAPP vending machines in stations. Existing 10-, 20- and 40-trip options will remain in the lineup.
Separately, the migration to the TAPP system will also affect SmartLink unlimited passes. PATH will stop selling them in stations and on the SmartLink website on 31 May. Still, reduced fare customers are the exception.
Also, PATH will begin a pilot programme to test new fare gates. The pilot is part of its campaign to eliminate fare evasion across the system. From spring, the Port Authority will install new ADA-compliant fare gates. The work will take place at the World Trade Center station. It will also seek to replace its network of 341 gates. That network includes standard and ADA gates across 13 stations.
