29.03.2026
Authorities in Spain’s Balearic Islands have confirmed Palma de Mallorca metro Line M2. The Balearic government outlined the city’s second metro route, which starts in central Palma. Also, the 6km line will run from Plaça d’Espanya to Secar de la Real. It will add four new stations to the network.

Palma de Mallorca metro Line M2 route and cost
The scheme has an estimated budget of €230m. In addition, the total rises to €300m with the purchase of five new trains. The new line will use part of the existing Line M1 infrastructure. That section runs between Plaça d’Espanya, Jacint Verdaguer and Son Costa. Meanwhile, about 4km of new construction is planned from Son Costa. The stations are Son Hugo, Son Rossinyol, Son Espases and Secar de la Real. For example, Son Espases is the site of a major teaching hospital.

Approval process and opening schedule
On March 25, Balearic regional president Margalida Prohens presented the project. She said the chosen alignment is expected to receive initial approval shortly. That step will allow public consultation to begin. Construction is scheduled to start in 2029. At the same time, the work is expected to take around three years. Line M2 is due to enter service in 2033. Estimated journey time from central Palma to Secar de la Real is 11 minutes.
Palma metro expansion within the Mallorca rail network strategy
Separately, the government estimates that the new line could carry up to 3 million passengers a year. Still, Rail Journal reported the 2025 passenger total. That figure covered Line M1 and the Mallorcan Rail Services (SFM) network. Together, they recorded just over 11.6 million passenger-journeys in 2025. The new route could raise total ridership by around 26%. It could also roughly double the number of passengers currently using the Palma metro.
This Palma metro expansion forms part of a broader strategy for Mallorca’s rail network. The wider programme also includes a line from Sa Pobla to Alcúdia. Its planned opening is in 2031. It also includes another route from Palma to Llucmajor. Its planned opening is in 2032.
