North Carolina DOT rail funding package targets freight reliability

NCDOT Rail Division Director Jason Orthner said the projects are intended to strengthen North Carolina’s freight rail network by improving reliability and resiliency. In a press release, he said the effort is focused on reinforcing infrastructure that supports businesses across the state and the broader economy.

The work is being funded through the state’s Freight Rail & Rail Crossing Safety Improvement Program, which backs freight rail and rail-crossing safety investments. Recent grant rounds under the same umbrella have also been covered by Railway Supply.

Largest award goes to Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railway

The largest share of the North Carolina DOT rail funding package went to the Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railway, which is set to receive more than $4.845 million for rail replacement on its Piedmont Division. AC&W CEO Anthony Menzies said the work advances safe and efficient freight movement in the region.
