Jason Orthner, NCDOT Rail Division director, emphasized the benefits of these projects, which improve the resiliency of freight rail operations. Orthner noted these enhancements contribute directly to the state’s economic growth and help local businesses thrive.
The funding is provided through the Freight Rail & Rail Crossing Safety Improvement (FRRCSI) program. Since 2014, this initiative has focused on boosting rail safety, infrastructure health, and system performance. Partner railroads and the N.C. Ports Authority have matched the state’s investment for each project.
Key Regional Railroad Infrastructure Upgrades
Two notable projects in North Carolina recently received significant funding under this program. Aberdeen & Rockfish Railroad was awarded $723,130 for track upgrades in Hoke County. Raleigh & Fayetteville Railroad secured $999,586 for corridor improvements in Wake and Harnett counties.
Carl Hollowell, president of Aberdeen & Rockfish Railroad, praised the collaboration between the rail division and local railroads. He credited NCDOT’s proactive support with enabling safer and more efficient rail networks across the state.
These upgrades are vital for ensuring North Carolina’s rail infrastructure keeps pace with growing freight demands. Improved logistics empower local businesses and reinforce the state’s long-term economic resilience.
NCDOT continues to invest strategically in freight rail infrastructure, boosting transportation efficiency while strengthening economic vitality.
