Norfolk Southern asset disposition app widens internal rollout
03.03.2026
Norfolk Southern asset disposition app use is widening across the railroad. The company first announced the in-house tool publicly in January, as reported by Progressive Railroading.

At the same time, work is underway on parallel apps for the disposition of rail and other track materials.
Thoroughbred Trading Post app widens access and auctions
Also, Norfolk Southern says more employees are now using the Thoroughbred Trading Post app, an in-house asset disposition mobile app meant to streamline how operational items are handled. In addition, the company has upgraded auction capabilities so that larger assets can be routed directly to auction partners.

The asset disposition process covered by the app spans equipment, machinery, tools, facility items and other operational materials. Employees can upload photos and descriptions to initiate requests to remove, auction, recycle or reassign items, as outlined in a Feb. 26 company post on Norfolk Southern Story Yard.
Standardizing requests and equipment data replaces email chains
In a Feb. 26 “Story Yard” article on the company’s website, Norfolk Southern officials said the app supports faster, more consistent handling of disposition requests. Meanwhile, the goal is to standardize how requests and data about equipment are stored, eliminating email chains and spreadsheets.
Why faster removal matters for rail yard operations?
Still, Norfolk Southern officials said quicker removal of unused equipment helps keep rail yards safer and supports proper outcomes for assets, whether they are sold, recycled, or reassigned. A similar summary of the rollout was also noted by Railway Age.
