The Maroona to Portland Re-sleepering Project is moving into its first stage. According to Rail Express, early works are set to begin. The project is a $150 million rail upgrade.

The project is intended to reinforce an important freight route in western Victoria. Also, it is meant to support more efficient freight movement. That includes goods to and from the Port of Portland.
Meanwhile, ARTC will carry out vegetation management along the corridor. In addition, it will improve visibility at passive level crossings. Separately, it will restore access tracks.

These enabling works are intended to prepare the corridor. They come before the main re-sleepering program. At the same time, the program will replace degraded timber sleepers. It will use modern concrete sleepers. Also, it includes targeted improvements to the 173-kilometre rail track between Maroona and Portland.
Freight corridor upgrade in west Victoria
Still, the line is expected to handle heavier freight loads. In addition, it is expected to support higher train speeds. Meanwhile, the line will link south-western Victoria and the Port of Portland. It will also link south east South Australia. It will connect them to the interstate network.
Meanwhile, the project is part of ARTC’s Network Investment Program. It is a joint initiative with the Australian Government. It is intended to strengthen and future proof the country’s rail infrastructure. In addition, more than $1 billion is being invested over five years to 2030. The aim is to support the continued efficient movement of freight around the country.
ARTC investment program and project benefits
Separately, ARTC said it would continue engaging. That engagement will include stakeholders, local councils and the community. It will continue as the works progress.
Katya Moskvina, ARTC Senior Project Manager, said: “The Maroona to Portland Re-sleepering Project will revitalise an important freight corridor that supports regional industries and export supply chains in Victoria’s west.
“By replacing ageing timber sleepers with new concrete sleepers and improving the overall track condition, we’re optimising the line’s efficiency and operational reliability.
“This investment will support more efficient rail freight, helping regional industries move their products to market while reducing pressure on local roads.”
