Alstom NextGen Acela helped place the rail manufacturer on Fast Company’s 2026 transportation companies list. Also, the Fast Company ranking covered the world’s most innovative transportation companies for 2026. The transportation category had 15 entries. Alstom ranked fourth. It was the only rail-related firm on the list.

Alstom NextGen Acela and the Fast Company ranking

Fast Company tied that recognition to Alstom’s role. That role involved developing Amtrak’s NextGen Acela trains. The magazine described the fleet as “bringing European-style high-speed train service to the U.S.”

Meanwhile, the result kept Alstom near the top of the transportation list. No transportation firms appeared on Fast Company’s separate global top 50 list. Still, Google led that global ranking.

Technical features behind the recognition

Fast Company pointed to several Acela features. For example, the trains have a top speed of up to 186 mph. They also use an active-tilt system. That system allows faster travel through curves.

In addition, the publication said the result “is a smoother experience that makes it easier to type, sleep, or hold a cup of coffee.” It also noted the benefits of lightweight equipment. Those benefits include saving energy. They also include reducing wear on infrastructure.

What Alstom Americas and Fast Company said?

Separately, the company and the magazine both commented on the ranking. Michael Keroulle addressed the project in a press release.

In a press release, Michael Keroulle, president of Alstom Americas, said, “The NextGen Acela project is a testament to American innovation, creativity and problem-solving. Amtrak challenged us to help build a stronger, more connected America—one that creates skilled jobs, revitalizes communities and gives travelers a more elevated, comfortable way to move.” He added, “Together, we’ve shown that high-speed rail can be a powerful engine of economic growth across the U.S. and a catalyst for the country’s next era of mobility.”

At the same time, Fast Company also explained its thinking on the 2026 list.

Fast Company editor-in-chief Brendan Vaughan also described the thinking behind the 2026 list. He said, “Our list of the Most Innovative Companies is about spotlighting organizations that don’t just adapt to change — they drive it.” He added, “The companies we honor this year are redefining what leadership looks like in 2026, pairing bold ideas with measurable impact and turning breakthrough innovation into real-world value. They are setting the pace for their industries and offering a blueprint for what sustained innovation can achieve.”
