Low-speed collision between City of New Orleans and CN freight injured three passengers on Sunday, Feb. 22, after Amtrak’s City of New Orleans was struck at slow speed near Memphis, as reported by Trains.com.

Amtrak said three people were injured in the incident. Meanwhile, Memphis police told WREG-TV that two people were taken to the hospital with non-critical injuries, as reported by Localmemphis.com.

City of New Orleans train No. 59 collision near Memphis

An Amtrak representative said southbound Amtrak City of New Orleans train No. 59 was stopped when it was “contacted by a freight train traveling at a slow rate of speed.” Separately, Memphis police said they were called to the scene at 11:41 a.m.

At the same time, a Canadian National spokeswoman said no fires or hazardous materials were involved in the Canadian National freight train incident.

NTSB investigating Amtrak collision

In addition, the National Transportation Safety Board said in a social media post Sunday evening that it is sending a team of investigators to the scene of the collision.

Amtrak train delay and schedule behind after the collision

Amtrak said 128 people were on board. Still, the City of New Orleans left Chicago on Saturday night more than three hours late and was 3 hours and 15 minutes late leaving Memphis before the collision.

According to Amtrak Train Status, the train later resumed its trip about 8 hours and 20 minutes behind schedule. As of 9:15 p.m. Central Time, it was projected to arrive in New Orleans at 11:14 p.m., about seven and a half hours late.
