L0 Series maglev train aims to halve Tokyo–Nagoya trips
26.01.2026
L0 Series maglev train testing is moving forward in Japan, with Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) running trials of the Japanese Maglev technology, as reported by Euronews. JR Central says the concept could create the world’s fastest rail service between Tokyo and Nagoya.

This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
L0 Series Maglev Testing And Speed Claims
JR Central points to a potential top speed of up to 603 km/h for the L0 Series. That is well above China’s Shanghai Maglev at 465 km/h, while Europe’s record rail speed is described as around 354 km/h. For the same headline figures on speed and project cost, see Railway Supply.
Tokyo–Nagoya Route And Chuo-Shinkansen Line
The planned service centers on the Tokyo to Nagoya route, which is currently served by Shinkansen bullet trains. If introduced as described, the maglev operation would halve the current travel time on the corridor. The Chuo-Shinkansen line is under construction to enable those speeds, and the project may later be extended to serve Osaka.

How Magnetic Levitation Technology Enables Higher Speeds?
Magnetic levitation technology lifts the train above the track, enabling much higher speeds. JR Central explains the basics in its superconducting maglev overview. The build-out is framed as a major investment, with costs already at nearly €60 billion, and the project is still about eight years away from completion.
