It connects the previous 5.7-mile streetcar route with Kansas City’s riverfront. The route runs from Third Street and Grand Boulevard in the River Market to the midpoint of the Berkeley Riverfront.

Riverfront Extension route and access

According to a City of Kansas City news release, the Riverfront Extension is part of broader development work along the riverfront. Also, that work includes a dedicated pathway to the Grand Boulevard Bridge. The pathway is designed to separate pedestrians and cyclists from the streetcar and motorized vehicles.

KC Streetcar’s original service began in 2016. In addition, overall ridership more than doubled after the Main Street Extension. The system’s first expansion opened in October 2025.

Kansas City Streetcar access

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said in a press release:

“The Riverfront Extension connects neighborhoods, opens the river to more Kansas Citians, and shows what’s possible when we invest in smart, sustainable transit,”

“From UMKC to the riverfront, the KC Streetcar keeps weaving our city together, and the extension is the latest proof that we’re committed to making Kansas City more accessible for all.”
