Kanpur Metro Orange Line Extension Officially Inaugurated by PM Modi
01.06.2025
On May 30, 2025, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Kanpur Metro Orange Line extension at the new Chunniganj station, enhancing urban mobility with five new underground stations. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The updated corridor now connects Chunniganj with Kanpur Central, completing a major phase of Metro Corridor I. This underground link expands the previously elevated system and reaches critical parts of the city.

Modi highlighted how the metro simplifies access to Naveen Market and Bada Chauraha for both merchants and shoppers. He also emphasized faster connections to Central Railway Station and IIT Kanpur.
Built under the “Make in India” initiative, the Kanpur Metro Orange Line runs Indian-made trains from Alstom, using advanced CBTC technology for safer and more efficient service.

Alstom supplies 67 three-car trainsets (201 metro cars) for the project. Each train carries around 960 passengers and is produced at the Savli plant in Gujarat, supporting the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission.
Forty trains currently serve the city, enabling frequent, reliable operations. These trains also reduce emissions and ease congestion on Kanpur’s busy streets.
Future Growth of the Kanpur Metro Orange Line Corridor
The Kanpur Metro Orange Line began service in December 2021 from IIT Kanpur. With the extension to Kanpur Central, the line now spans 14 stations—nine elevated and five underground.
A further expansion is underway, adding seven more stations, including two underground. When finished, the full corridor will run 23.8 km, including 15.2 km of elevated track and 8.6 km underground.
This east–west transit backbone will ultimately link IIT Kanpur to Naubasta, improving daily commutes and supporting long-term development across the city.
