Indian Railways Adds 112 Special Trips for Onam Rush

INDIA: Indian Railways plans 112 special train trips for the Onam travel period, adding temporary passenger capacity as festival demand rises on routes serving Kerala this season.

PTI reported on August 7 that the programme had reached 112 trips, with 54 to be operated by Southern Railway and the remaining 58 by other railway zones. The figure refers to train trips or services, not 112 separate trainsets.

Confirmed Onam timetable windows

Several of the additional services already have published operating dates. On the Mangaluru Central–Chennai Egmore corridor, Train 06126 is scheduled to run on Mondays from July 13 through August 31, while Train 06125 operates in the opposite direction on Tuesdays from July 14 through September 1. The published schedule lists eight journeys in each direction.

The same schedule includes Train 06110 from Thiruvananthapuram Central to Tambaram on August 12, 19 and 26 and September 2, with Train 06109 returning from Tambaram on August 13, 20 and 27 and September 3.

Extra capacity across Kerala routes

Other announced services widen the temporary capacity increase beyond those two corridors. A Chennai Central–Kollam bi-weekly special is scheduled outbound on August 13, 15, 20, 22, 27 and 29 and September 3 and 5, with return trips on August 14, 16, 21, 23, 28 and 30 and September 4 and 6.

A separate Thiruvananthapuram North–Mangaluru Junction weekly special is due to operate on August 12, 19 and 26 and September 2, with return services on August 13, 20 and 27 and September 3. These Southern Railway timetable details place confirmed Onam specials on routes serving both southern and northern Kerala.

The published examples show the additional capacity operating from mid-July into early September. The overall 112-trip programme is broader than any one route, while Southern Railway accounts for 54 of the announced trips.
