Illinois Funds Safety Upgrades at Three Rail Crossings

USA: Illinois regulators have approved nearly $1.6 million for safety upgrades at three public rail crossings in Roberts, where antiquated warning devices are to be replaced within an 18-month work window.
The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) approved the allocation from the state’s Grade Crossing Protection Fund for the Weldon, Main and Green street crossings used by CN’s Illinois Central Railroad. The fund will cover 95% of the estimated signal design and construction cost, while Illinois Central will pay the remaining 5% and all future costs to maintain the signals and circuitry.
Three Roberts crossings are included
Federal Railroad Administration crossing records identify all three locations as open public at-grade crossings on the Illinois Central line in Roberts. Weldon Street is crossing 289325K, Main Street is 289326S and Green Street is 289327Y.
The approved funding announcement does not provide a per-crossing split of the nearly $1.6 million signal allocation, so the individual design and construction budgets for Weldon, Main and Green streets are not specified.

Warning devices are the core of the work
The project calls for replacing antiquated warning devices at all three crossings. The ICC says its wider Grade Crossing Protection Fund can support projects involving automatic flashing-light signals, gates and signal-circuitry improvements, but the Roberts announcement does not specify the exact replacement configuration.
That means the available project details do not establish whether gates will be added or which circuitry package will be installed at the three Roberts locations.
Weldon Street will receive additional work
The ICC will also provide $67,000 from the Grade Crossing Protection Fund to remove existing track and resurface the Weldon Street crossing. No equivalent resurfacing allocation is identified for Main or Green streets in the announcement.
The commission requires all three crossing projects to be completed within 18 months.
