PORTUGAL: Alstom’s order covers 153 Adessia Stream trains for CP’s urban and regional networks, with the first units scheduled to enter passenger service from 2029 onward.

The fleet will comprise 98 trains for urban and suburban services in Lisbon, Porto and Cascais and 55 units for regional routes. Each train will have three cars and capacity for up to 450 passengers.

A two-stage order reaches 153 trains

The programme was built in two contractual stages. CP’s base contract, signed in October 2025, covered 117 electric multiple units: 62 for urban services and 55 for regional operations. CP valued that stage at €746 million.

A March 2026 addendum added 36 more electric multiple units for urban services and increased the investment by €318 million. CP therefore puts the combined investment at €1.064 billion. Alstom describes the overall contract as worth €1.03 billion.

The additional 36 units lift the urban allocation from 62 to 98 trains, taking the total fleet to 153. Alstom describes the programme as the largest train acquisition in Portugal’s history.

First trains are due in 2029

The original contract scheduled the first units for delivery in 2029. Under the addendum, CP brought the final delivery forward to 2031 from the previously planned 2033 deadline. Alstom says the first trains are scheduled to enter passenger service in 2029.

The Adessia Stream fleet is designed for the Portuguese network. The trains will provide step-free access and a level floor throughout, with Wi-Fi and dedicated spaces for wheelchairs and bicycles. Accessibility organisations participated in the design process.

Alstom says the trains were developed using eco-design principles and have a stated recyclability rate above 95%. Digital systems are also designed to improve energy efficiency and support maintenance.

The confirmed 2029–2031 delivery window provides a defined timetable for introducing the 153-train fleet across CP’s urban and regional services.
