ETCS-equipped rail grinding machine completes UK tests
11.03.2026
Loram supplied the ETCS-equipped rail grinding machine for Network Rail. Also, it has completed ETCS Level 2 tests. It is the first vehicle of its type in the UK. It is prepared for digital cab signaling.

Meanwhile, the machine is known as RGC01. At the same time, it uses an ETCS onboard system provided by Hitachi Rail. Testing was carried out on Network Rail’s test lines at Tuxford and Melton Mowbray.

In addition, the work is part of the East Coast Digital Programme. It aims to introduce the European ETCS signaling system on the East Coast Main Line. Separately, the project will gradually replace traditional trackside signaling with digital cab signaling. Trains will be controlled by the European Rail Traffic Management System.

“We welcome the introduction of a new rail grinding machine ready for digital cab signaling,” said Chris Hobden, program director of the East Coast Digital Programme at Network Rail.
Still, he said the introduction of ETCS would enable more efficient network operation. It would also bring better performance. In addition, it would bring a higher level of safety.
RGC01 role in infrastructure maintenance
For example, RGC01 was built in the United States. It was delivered to the UK in May 2025. Also, it is fitted with 40 grinding stones. They can be digitally programmed to re-profile the rail head. This depends on infrastructure condition, traffic speed, or the requirements of line engineers.
Hitachi Rail system integration for Network Rail
Meanwhile, the ETCS system integration project took approximately two years. It involved Loram and Hitachi Rail. It also involved several companies in the design and testing of the system.
