On November 4, 2020 Ukrainian railway workers celebrate their professional holiday “Day of Ukrainian Railway”.

In 1993, after Ukraine had already declared the independence from USSR, Ukrainian Railways  authorities decided to leave old Soviet tradition and make a proposal about Ukrainian Railway Day to the President. The holiday was established “in support of the initiative of Ukrainian railroad workers” according to the Decree of the President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk “On the Railway Day” dated July 15, 1993 No. 257/93RP and celebrated on the first Sunday in August.

A proposal to celebrate Railway Day on the 4th of November was made after the appointment of Georgiy Kirpa as the General Director of Ukrzaliznytsia in 2000. According to the Decree of the President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma of December 11, 2002 No. 1140/2002 “On Amending the Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 257 of July 15, 1993” Railway Day is celebrated annually on the 4th of November.

On November 4, 1861 the first passenger train arrived from Vienna via Krakow and Przemysl to Lviv railway station, located on the territory of the Austrian Empire. This day is considered the beginning of the history of railways in Ukraine.
