Renfe Mercancías intends to allocate 122.7 million euros to support its project to decarbonise, digitize and improve the Spanish rail freight system. Of the total investment, €37.3 million (30% of the total) comes from the MITMA Sustainable and Digital Transport Support Program, which is part of the EU-funded NextGenerationEU Recovery programme. It is reported by Railway Supply magazine with reference to Kurier Kolejowy.

Renfe Mercancías’ investment will enable the purchase of platforms and wagons for the transport of goods on the railway lines, as well as powerful electric locomotives powered by 100% renewable energy.

Part of the investment will be directed to the installation of noise reduction systems in wagons, equipping locomotives with the ERTMS security system, digitization and optimization of processes and services in freight transport centers, as well as the introduction of new rolling stock identification and tracking technology.

The goal of these projects is to get freight transport equipped with technological advances available in other areas of the sector to make it more sustainable and competitive. Specific projects must be completed by December 31, 2025.

The government subsidy program for companies is part of the support for sustainable and digital transport, and its goal is to raise the profile of railways as the least polluting means of passenger and freight transport.
