Afghanistan’s new government promises Uzbekistan to assist in the construction of the Trans-Afghan railway
The Taliban movement announced its intention to assist in the construction of a railway in Afghanistan.
“We confirm our interest in extending the implementation of infrastructure projects in Afghanistan with the participation of Uzbekistan, in particular, the construction of a railway and a power transmission line. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan will provide all the necessary assistance to our Uzbek partners in this direction”, the document says.
In July 2021, the President of Uzbekistan discussed these infrastructure projects at a meeting with the head of Afghanistan. The parties confirmed their interest in the construction of the Termez-Mazar-i-Sharif-Kabul-Peshawar railway.
The Trans-Afghan Railway project is estimated at nearly $ 5 billion. It provides for the construction of a 573 km long highway with a transit potential of 20 million tons of cargo per year.
It will connect Tashkent through the capital of Afghanistan with Peshawar. The construction of the highway was planned to begin this fall.
