Transit transportation of 20 TEU containers through the Russian Railways network in 2022 may decrease by almost 25%. This was announced by Deputy General Director of the carrier of the aggressor country Alexei Shilo, reports Railway Supply magazine with reference to Business Censor.
In January-September, transit has already decreased by 17.6%, according to the results of all 2022, Russian Railways transported at least 830 thousand transit TEU, while in 2021 this figure reached 1.1 million TEU – an absolute record in history.
Shilo mentioned the drop in traffic from China to Europe and back as the main reason for the decline in container transit. For 9 months of 2022, they fell by 35%.

In January-September, 4.8 million TEU passed through the Russian Railways network (an increase of 0.5% compared to the same period in 2021): domestic transportation of containers, which account for the bulk of the volume, increased by 3.6%, imports – by 13.5% , while exports fell by 3.5%, said Shilo. The loading of all types of cargo on the Russian Railways network in 2022 will be reduced by 5%, that is, to 1.22 billion tons, he added.
In January 2022, a month before the start of the invasion of Ukraine, the top manager stated that Russian Railways plans to quadruple container transit traffic – up to 4 million TEU, until 2027 at the most.
