DC Streetcar to End Service in 2026 Transition Plan
31.10.2025
The DC Streetcar will cease operating starting March 31, 2026, following the confirmation from the District of Columbia Department of Transportation that the service will end earlier than expected.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

DC Streetcar Shutdown and Coordination with MetroBus
DDOT has declared that the DC Streetcar would cease its services as of the spring of 2026. This would end the only streetcar program in the city. The service began in the year 2016 and travels 2.2 miles long.

According to authorities, the reason for the shutdown comes as a result of the low usage of the service. DDOT has been partnering with the WMATA to develop alternatives for the users of the service.
As per DDOT, the coordination of services between the sources mentioned above would ensure service continuity when the streetcar service ends.
DC Streetcar Replacement with Electric Bus Fleet
In May, the streetcar network would be replaced with an electric bus system between the end of 2028 and mid-2029, as revealed by the mayor at the time, Muriel Bowser. Instead, the buses will operate above the wires like the streetcar.
This information comes from the report filed by the WTOP News service, per The Washington Post. Nothing more has been revealed about the process.
While the exact start date for the construction and conversion activities related to the new system has yet to be confirmed by the District government, coordination activities are expected to continue through 2026.
