In July, Conway Yard safety milestones included more than a year without a reportable injury and over 500 days without a stop signal violation. Norfolk Southern Railway’s facility reached both benchmarks while operating at higher traffic levels.

Safety record at Conway Yard

The stop-signal standard⁠ concerns whether trains stop as required before entering occupied or protected track. Norfolk Southern officials said maintaining compliance over an extended period reflects effective communication, operating discipline and a shared commitment to following proper procedures.

“This is one of the largest operations on the network,” said NS Conway Yard Assistant Superintendent Craig Pequignot. “To see this team achieve these milestones at this level of volume shows what’s possible.”

Higher volume and improved dwell time

Located roughly 22 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Conway Yard reached the safety marks while processing more traffic. Compared with the previous year, the yard handled 10% more volume and improved dwell time by 21%⁠. In a single shift, it also processed 1,130 rail cars.
