PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe has begun construction work on the road No. 622 Podłęże – Piekiełko in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship of Poland to boost regional connectivity and develop a new connection to the nation’s key transport centers.

Construction of a Railway Line to Connect Key Regional Stations

As part of the project, PKP PLK inked a $400 million-plus agreement with a group of companies led by Budimex, Budimex Kolejnictwo, and Gülermak. The new stretch will stretch for eight kilometres and join the train stations Tymbark and Ścig, forming a key transport artery for the south of the country.

There will be construction of two new tunnels by the engineers – 3.8 km and 1 km long – new flyovers and new bridges. All the road crossing shall be grade-separated so train traffic shall be quicker and safer.

A digital traffic control system will enable passenger trains to travel at a maximum 160 km/h and freight trains 120 km/h. It will be a fully electrified line minimizing pollution and making the transport network in the area even more energy efficient.

The investment encompasses a new stop — Stróża Station — dedicated for commuters who have limited mobility. It will accommodate shelters, seats, informers, and bike parking. Travelers will have access to Limanowa, Mszana Dolna, and Gdów from this point, making it easier for them to take regional journeys.

Modernization activity is also being carried out for the No. 104 line (Nowy Sącz – Chabówka). The stretch between Chabówka – Rabka Zdrój will be operational in August 2025. Hence, the new No. 622 line will supplement the new modernized network and improve the transportation connectivity of Lesser Poland.

Specialists point out that the project is of key strategic significance because it establishes new employment and triggers regional economic activity. Investments into the construction of railways promote the growth of industry, tourism industry, and logistics. Additionally, electrification minimizes the need for fossil fuels and serves the environmental policy of Poland.
