Investments in the High-Speed Railway Network

The China State Railway Group projected fixed-asset investments of ¥590 billion ($82.08 billion) in 2025. Officials confirmed that 2,600 kilometers of new rail lines will be added this year.

Passenger traffic surged to 4.08 billion trips in 2024, reflecting a 10.8% increase from 2023. Analysts predict the number will rise further to 4.28 billion trips by 2025, indicating strong demand.

Cargo transport also expanded, reaching 3.99 billion tonnes in 2024, a 1.9% increase. Growth trends highlight the strategic role of railways in freight and logistics sectors.

China’s railway investments rose 11.3% year on year, reaching ¥850.6 billion ($118.37 billion). Officials emphasized that enhanced infrastructure would support trade and regional connectivity.

China-Europe freight trains completed 19,000 trips in 2024, a 10% increase from the previous year. They transported 2.07 million TEU containers, reflecting a 9% annual rise in cargo volumes.

Officials stressed that investments in infrastructure would stimulate job creation and economic expansion. This focus aligns with sustainability goals, promoting energy efficiency and lower emissions.

China also plans to incorporate advanced technologies into its rail systems by 2030. Smart systems and automation will further improve safety, reliability, and operational efficiency.

The high-speed railway network remains central to China’s vision for modern transportation. With continuous development, the network supports economic growth, trade, and urban connectivity.
