CRRC Delivers Seven Trains for Shanghai Metro Line 22

CHINA: The first seven Shanghai Metro Line 22 trains have reached Dongjing Road Depot, starting acceptance testing and commissioning for the future link to Chongming Island.

Seven GoA4 trains enter depot testing

In a statement dated 14 July, CRRC confirmed the arrival of the first seven trains, developed and manufactured by CRRC ZELC. At the depot, the vehicles will be lifted before undergoing acceptance checks and commissioning ahead of passenger service.

The delivery moves the project from vehicle production into on-site testing. The trains were procured under Shanghai’s first integrated arrangement combining rolling stock supply with long-term maintenance services.

Each train uses a three-car, all-motorised formation. A GoA4 automation system is designed for unattended operation, while the vehicles can couple and uncouple automatically on the main line. Their maximum operating speed is 120 km/h.

CRRC has fitted silicon carbide auxiliary converters and oil-free air compressors, technologies intended to improve energy efficiency and reduce maintenance requirements. The exterior and interior styling uses an “Oriental Dragon” theme alongside references to Chongming’s terraced fields, rivers and reed beds.

Line 22 advances toward system testing

The train deliveries follow another construction milestone. The Shanghai municipal government reported that track laying across the route was completed on 21 April 2026. The line runs for more than 42 kilometres between Jinji Road in Pudong and Yu’an on Chongming Island, crosses the Yangtze River twice via Changxing Island and includes eight stations.

Following track completion, contractors were due to continue precision track adjustment, station decoration and system testing. A later municipal project update said Line 22 was expected to meet the conditions for opening within 2026, although the CRRC delivery announcement did not give a passenger-service date.

Once operational, the route will bring Chongming Island into Shanghai’s metro network. Transfers are planned at Jinji Road for Line 9 and Shenjiang Road for Line 12, giving island passengers connections to the wider urban system.
