CEFSA Adds EURO6000 Locomotive to Its Electric Fleet

SPAIN: CEFSA has placed a new EURO6000 electric locomotive into service, expanding traction capacity for freight services as the operator develops its intermodal, vehicle and steel logistics portfolio.

A 32-locomotive electric fleet

In its 24 July announcement, Alonso Group said the Valencia-built locomotive was already operational. Its arrival brings CEFSA’s fleet to 32 electric locomotives and adds capacity for freight services connected with international trade flows.

The operator expects the new unit to increase traction capacity and improve the reliability and efficiency of its freight operations. It will support CEFSA’s intermodal offer while the company continues developing rail vehicle transport and prepares additional traffic in intermodal and steel logistics.

What the EURO6000 platform can deliver?

The EURO6000 is a six-axle electric freight locomotive manufactured by Stadler in Valencia. In technical information published by Stadler, the manufacturer says the 6 MW platform can haul trains of more than 2,000 tonnes on steep gradients in single-locomotive operation.

Stadler’s EURO6000 product page says the model is available for 1,668 mm Iberian gauge and 1,435 mm standard gauge, with universal bogies offered to simplify gauge changes. However, CEFSA’s announcement did not identify its locomotive’s gauge and voltage configuration, acquisition structure or first operating routes.

CEFSA broadens its freight portfolio

CEFSA, or Compañía Europea Ferroviaria, joined Alonso’s logistics division in 2024. The operator has expanded its rail vehicle transport activity in recent years and now plans to add further intermodal and steel-sector traffic for industrial customers.

The locomotive also supports Alonso’s Global Logistics Plan, which is intended to connect population centres across the Iberian Peninsula with local rail freight services and link major ports with international traffic through the group’s intermodal logistics platforms. For now, the confirmed operational change is the addition of one EURO6000; no timetable for the planned new traffic has been disclosed.
