CargoBeamer Stuttgart–Milan route began operating on Monday. It adds a new Germany–Italy link through the Swiss Alps. The launch follows the January start of the Liège–Domodossola service. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

It replaces the earlier Stuttgart-Kornwestheim–Domodossola service. The southern end of the connection now shifts from Domodossola to the Milan area.

CargoBeamer Stuttgart–Milan route and terminal shift

As outlined in a CargoBeamer press release, the service links Kornwestheim with Malpensa Intermodale. The DUSS terminal is in Kornwestheim, near Stuttgart. Malpensa Intermodale sits in the northwestern part of the Milan metropolitan area. Meanwhile, the service extends CargoBeamer’s transalpine network between Germany, the Benelux countries and Italy.

At the start, the service will run with four round trips a week. In addition, CargoBeamer said the frequency is planned to rise. The target is five weekly trips in the medium term. Also, rail traction is again being handled with SBB Cargo International. The operator works on the transalpine corridor.

Capacity, trailer types and CO2 emissions reduction

According to CargoBeamer, the new link is the second connection introduced. It is meant to take over remaining capacity. This follows the closure of the Rolling Highway service between Freiburg and Novara. Separately, the operator said the route cuts CO2 emissions by about 88% for each semi-trailer. The comparison is with diesel road transport.

CargoBeamer also said the connection is open to all types of semi-trailers. For example, it can carry non-crane-handled semi-trailers. That includes refrigerated trailers, box trailers and waste transport units. In addition, it can carry standard crane-handled units, containers and mobile boxes.

“Following the highly successful launch of the Liège–Domodossola service, we are seeing strong momentum and clear demand for additional capacity in intermodal transport between southwestern Germany and the Milan metropolitan area. Our new service directly addresses this need. With our new partner terminal in Milan-Sacconago, we are very well positioned to serve freight flows destined for road and air transport and to continue expanding our network in northern Italy,” said Boris Timm, COO of CargoBeamer.
