California rail operator acquisition brings Ridgewood into Sierra
14.03.2026
As reported by RailwayPro, this California rail operator acquisition brings Ridgewood into Sierra Railroad Company. Ridgewood Infrastructure has acquired a majority stake in the operator. It provides freight transportation, switching, storage, and transloading services. Its customers span industrial, agricultural, and energy supply chains.

Mike Hart, founder of Sierra Railroad Corporation, said: “Choosing a strategic partner involved identifying an investor with industry expertise, a compatible vision for growth, and the financial resources necessary to support the next stage of growth. Sierra had reached a point where significant short-term investment was needed to capitalize on the opportunities identified,”
California rail operator acquisition and the Sierra platform
In parallel with Ridgewood’s investment, Sierra Railroad Company is also acquiring Central Valley Ag Transport (CVAT). Meanwhile, as Ridgewood Infrastructure notes, CVAT is the operator and owner of an agricultural transshipment facility. It serves customers along the Sierra rail network.

Among Sierra’s operating subsidiaries is Sierra Northern Railway. In addition, it owns and operates freight rail operations in California. It also provides switching, storage, and transshipment services on a network of approximately 210 km of track.
Also, the network is near major agricultural and dairy production regions. It is also near key ports on the U.S. West Coast and major industrial centers. That provides essential last-mile connections within supply chains.
Sierra Northern Railway links and Railpower technology
Sierra Northern Railway also has strategic interconnections with Class I rail operators. For example, it has access to the Union Pacific Railroad and BNSF Railway networks. Still, these connections provide greater network redundancy and route flexibility. They also provide access to the national rail market.
The transaction also includes the Railpower subsidiary, part of Sierra Railroad Company. At the same time, Railpower owns and operates the only hydrogen-powered locomotive. It is approved by the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). As previously covered by Railway Supply, this highlights Sierra’s role in innovative rail technologies. It also highlights its role in zero-emission locomotives.
Central Valley Ag Transport and California agricultural sector
The acquisition of Central Valley Ag Transport strengthens Sierra’s platform. Separately, it vertically integrates transshipment services for agricultural products. Those products are essential to the dairy industry and the California agricultural sector more broadly.
CVAT provides specialized transshipment services along the Sierra Northern Railway network. For example, it facilitates the efficient transport of feed and other agricultural products. It also strengthens customer relationships and increases rail utilization.
Ryan Stewart, partner at Ridgewood Infrastructure, said the California rail operator “represents a high-quality shortline platform with solid fundamentals, a diversified customer base, and a strategic presence in some of California’s most important industrial and agricultural corridors,”
