D Line subway extension route and stations

As Railway Supply reported, the new section extends the route west from its former endpoint in Koreatown. It passes through Hancock Park, Windsor Square, the Fairfax District and Cathay Circle before reaching Beverly Hills. According to L.A. Metro, riders can now travel from Union Station in downtown Los Angeles to Beverly Hills in about 21 minutes.

Three underground stations opened with this section: Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega. Also, L.A. Metro officials said the stations are located near entertainment and cultural institutions. In addition, they include large-scale artworks integrated into the station architecture. The artworks were commissioned through the agency’s Metro Art program.

Role in Los Angeles’ 2028 games plan

This opening is the first step in a three-section extension. Meanwhile, the second and third sections are scheduled to open next year, before the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. At full buildout, the D Line will serve Westwood and the athlete village. That makes the extension a critical part of Los Angeles’ transit plans for the games.

Further coverage of Los Angeles transit planning ahead of the Olympic and Paralympic Games appears in the January 2026 edition of Progressive Railroading.
