An unmanned tram was tested in the Republic of Korea
17.11.2022
The Republic of Korea Railway Transport Research Institute (KRRI) has completed a 600 km test program for the autonomous V2X tram car. The car is equipped with a camera and a system for recognizing obstacles on the way, located at a distance of up to 100 m. Railway Supply magazine writes about this with reference to zdmira.
The system identifies pedestrians, cyclists and other obstacles on the way and models a list of actions depending on the impact risk assessment. The system recognizes the indications of traffic lights. Depending on the estimate of the travel time to the traffic light, a decision is made to stop the car or choose a speed to continue moving.

The car is equipped with batteries for operation in areas without a contact network. The autoguidance system ensures the exact stop of the car at the charging station.
The tests were carried out at the KRRI research center on a 1.3 km section of the track, which has three stops and four intersections with highways. The test program included driving modes with different speeds and imitation of various non-standard situations.
According to KRRI, V2X technology provides a probability of reducing incidents by more than 50%, collateral damage by 30%.
