Amtrak storm cancellations widen for Jan. 24–25 weekend

Amtrak storm cancellations grew as a major winter storm moved across the central and eastern United States, driving extensive service disruptions for Saturday, Jan. 24, and Sunday, Jan. 25; Amtrak advised passengers to monitor updates via its website and app.

For Friday, Jan. 23, the carrier added more trains to the cancellation list beyond earlier notices. Newly affected were the Crescent between Atlanta and New Orleans; both directions of the Adirondack between Albany, N.Y., and Montreal; the Floridian departure from Miami in its entirety; and the southbound Floridian between Chicago and Jacksonville, Fla., as reported by Trains.com.

Saturday’s updated list also reflects some changes that had been announced previously.

Canceled in their entirety, in both directions, are the Crescent, Lake Shore Limited, Silver Meteor, and Auto Train. Canceled in their entirety, but in just one direction, are the southbound Carolinian and the westbound Cardinal. Canceled in part are both directions of the Adirondack between Albany and Montreal, and both directions of the Floridian between Chicago and Jacksonville.
On the Northeast Corridor, Amtrak also listed Northeast Corridor Acela cancellations for northbound Acela No. 2248, a 7:50 a.m. departure from Washington, and southbound Acela No. 2259, a 4:25 p.m. departure from Boston South Station; background on Acela service is available from Railway Supply.
The most extensive impact comes from Amtrak Virginia services cancellations. Canceled in their entirety are northbound No. 124 (Newport News–Philadelphia) and No. 66 (Roanoke–Boston), along with southbound No. 65 (Boston–Newport News) and No. 151 (Philadelphia–Charlottesville). Additional Virginia segment cancellations include trains Nos. 147, 155, and 87 between Washington and Norfolk; trains Nos. 158 and 128 between Norfolk and Washington; and train No. 99 between Washington and Newport News.
Sunday cancellations expand across eastern trains and Northeast Regional routes
Sunday’s list broadens, with several routes canceled in their entirety in both directions: the Crescent, Lake Shore Limited, Silver Meteor, Auto Train, Carolinian, Palmetto, Pennsylvanian, and Vermonter.
Canceled in its entirety in one direction is the northbound Floridian. The Adirondack is canceled in both directions between Albany and Montreal.
Amtrak Virginia services cancellations remain extensive. Canceled in their entirety are northbound No. 66 (Roanoke–Boston), No. 124 (Newport News–Philadelphia), and No. 158 (Norfolk–New York), along with southbound Nos. 67 and 99 (both Boston–Newport News), No. 145 (New York–Charlottesville), No. 151 (Philadelphia–Charlottesville), and No. 157 (Springfield, Mass.–Norfolk). Segment cancellations include trains No. 87 and No. 155 between Washington and Norfolk; train No. 156 between Roanoke and Washington; train No. 165 between Newport News and Washington; and train No. 128 between Norfolk and Washington.
Additional Northeast Regional cancellations include northbounds 104, 118, and 122 (Washington–New York); 154 and 160 (Washington–Boston); and 140 and 146 (Washington–Springfield). Southbound cancellations include No. 143 (Springfield–Washington), Nos. 121 and 189 (New York–Washington), Nos. 135 and 139 (Boston–Washington), and No. 169 (Boston–Philadelphia).
