Amtrak schedule changes reshape D.C.–Virginia trips
21.12.2025
Amtrak schedule changes take effect Jan. 12, reshaping service between Virginia and Washington, D.C., during a daily construction window on the Long Bridge. As Railway Supply reports, train traffic will be stopped from 8 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., leading to cancellations and longer gaps for some morning riders.

Amtrak schedule changes: what starts Jan. 12
Amtrak has issued a modified timetable in response to a major construction project on the D.C.-Virginia border. The Long Bridge construction project is expected to run from 2026 to 2030 and, while work is active, the bridge will be closed to trains during the same midday window each day—details also reflected in VPRA’s service-change announcement.
That schedule is driven by local rules in Washington, D.C.: construction laws prohibit work on major projects at night and on Sundays, so the work must be done during the day. The Long Bridge remains a critical link for the region, since all trains use it to cross the Potomac River between Washington and Virginia.

Richmond-to-D.C. commuters face a tighter morning window
For Richmond-to-D.C. commuters, the biggest shift is on weekday northbound departures. The only morning Northeast Regional train will leave Richmond at 5:58 a.m., timed to reach Washington before the bridge closes at 8 a.m.
Miss that departure, and the next D.C.-bound option comes much later: another train will not leave Richmond for Washington until 11:06 a.m.
Amtrak will run an express bus service in the morning between Newport News and Washington, but it is not currently offering bus service from Richmond. VRE trains are expected to operate as scheduled, although after 8 a.m. their final stop will be Alexandria rather than Washington, D.C., as noted on VRE’s Long Bridge project page.
Southbound trips from Union Station: two cancellations
Southbound service from Washington toward Richmond will also be affected in the late-morning window. The first Northeast Regional train from Union Station, departing at 7:20 a.m., will run as scheduled and cross into Virginia before the closure begins.
Two later departures will not run during the construction period: the trains that normally leave at 8:41 a.m. and 11:12 a.m. will be canceled. After the work window ends, the regular schedule resumes in the afternoon.
What officials say about the schedule overhaul?
In a press release, VPRA Executive Director DJ Stadtler said the changes followed a review of available options aimed at limiting disruption while giving construction teams the time they need to work safely. “We want those passengers to know that we did not take these decisions lightly,” Stadtler said. “We evaluated every possible scenario to limit the disruptions while providing our construction teams with the work window they need to safely complete the project on time and on budget.”
Project leaders also say that once the work is completed, Amtrak will be able to offer more daily trains between Washington and Virginia.
