Amtrak Penn Station track repairs are scheduled for a one-week window that aligns with the final week of current service adjustments tied to the Portal Bridge cutover, according to NorthJersey.com.

Amtrak Penn Station track repairs: dates and scope

The work runs from March 9 through March 15. At the same time, that end date is when Amtrak expects to complete the cutover of one of two tracks to the new Portal North Bridge in New Jersey. At New York’s Penn Station, crews are set to replace four switches and an interlocking connecting the station to the North River Tunnels under the Hudson.

Amtrak spokesman Jason Abrams told the news site that the infrastructure is “showing signs of fatigue.” Still, he said pairing the Penn Station work with the Portal Bridge project is intended to reduce the amount of disruption for passengers, and that no additional service reductions will be required.

Portal Bridge cutover and the shift to Portal North Bridge

The Portal Bridge cutover has required Amtrak and NJ Transit to reduce trains between Newark and Secaucus, N.J., by more than 50% since Feb. 15, as previously covered by Trains.com [see “Portal Bridge cutover to trigger …,”Trains.com, Jan. 15, 2026]. Meanwhile, during the change, traffic on one of two tracks is moving from the existing Portal Bridge — a 116-year-old swing span — to the higher, fixed-span Portal North Bridge, which will eliminate bridge openings for marine traffic. The second track is slated to be cut over this fall.

Around-the-clock work and photos released March 3

Separately, Amtrak released photos Tuesday (March 3) showing ongoing work on the Portal Bridge, saying crews continue to work around the clock on the project “since there is so much that is necessary to connect the new bridge to the existing railroad.”
