Alto Canada high-speed rail consultations set for 2026 corridor
24.01.2026
Alto Canada high-speed rail consultations are now underway, as reported by Railway-News, marking the start of a public consultation programme for its proposed network in Canada. Running from 21 January to March 2026, the engagement focuses on communities between Toronto and Quebec City.

This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The programme sets out over 20 in-person sessions across corridor communities, alongside eight virtual sessions and a dedicated online information platform — a structure also described by Newswire.ca. Alto says the feedback it collects will inform the future selection of the rail alignment and station locations.

Public consultation programme: format and timeline
Within the Canada high-speed rail Toronto Quebec City corridor process, Alto is seeking input from residents, landowners and local authorities. The consultation is intended to help guide efforts to reduce environmental and social impacts while taking account of the needs of both urban and rural areas, a point also noted by Railway Supply.
A separate Indigenous communities engagement programme is included and has already begun. Alto says early engagement with Indigenous partners along the corridor has involved co-designed tools, technical briefings and collaboration agreements.
Alto high-speed rail Canada: alignment and station planning
Alto has framed the public consultations as a way to shape how the proposed rail network develops, particularly around the route alignment and station locations. Feedback gathered during the current phase, the organisation says, will be used to guide these future choices.
Minister of Transport and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, The Honourable Steven MacKinnon, called the launch of public consultations an important milestone for the Alto High-Speed Rail project. He said early engagement with Canadians, together with partnership work with Indigenous communities, is intended to ensure the project is shaped by local knowledge, environmental responsibility and shared priorities, laying the foundation for a modern transportation network that creates good jobs, supports economic growth, strengthens regional connections and delivers lasting benefits for corridor communities.
Alto Crown corporation and next steps in 2026
Alto is a Crown corporation tasked with developing Canada’s first high-speed rail network connecting Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa, Montréal, Laval, Trois-Rivières and Québec City. The proposed network is intended to improve connectivity along one of Canada’s most populated corridors.
Alto said feedback from consultations will help shape the rail network alignment, and that a second consultation is planned later in 2026 to review proposals.
Martin Imbleau, President & CEO of Alto, said public engagement is a cornerstone of the project. He added that broad consultations with Canadians, including meaningful dialogue with Indigenous communities, are intended to ensure every voice is heard in shaping the future of transportation, and that the network will reflect shared priorities, respect Indigenous rights and knowledge, and deliver lasting benefits for generations to come.
