Santo Domingo Metro Metropolis trains have begun arriving for the Line 2 extension. Alstom has delivered the first two of eight new three-car units. The project is being carried out by the Office for Transport Reorganization (OPRET).

“The delivery of the first trains for the extension of Line 2 of the Santo Domingo Metro is an important milestone for Alstom and for urban mobility in the country. This project reflects our long-term commitment to the Dominican Republic and to the development of modern, safe, and sustainable transport solutions, in close collaboration with OPRET,” said Maite Ramos, General Manager for Northern Latin America at Alstom.

Meanwhile, the trains are being built at Alstom’s Santa Perpétua plant in Barcelona. They are part of a broader plan for public transport in the Dominican capital. The plan covers modernization and expansion. Separately, the contract for these eight three-car trains was signed in 2024. It followed Alstom’s 2023 contract to supply 10 Metropolis trains for Line 1, as Alstom notes.

Alstom is shipping three separate cars from Spain to the Dominican Republic. There, they are coupled together and undergo final inspections before delivery. After delivery, the trains are integrated into the metro system. They then complete final testing in the Santo Domingo operating environment.

“These new trains represent a concrete step forward for urban mobility in Santo Domingo. This project reflects the joint effort between OPRET and Alstom, aimed at providing an increasingly efficient, safe, and reliable system, keeping pace with growing demand and improving the daily experience of metro users,” commented Jhael Isa, director of OPRET.

Before entering commercial service, the delivered trains will undergo rigorous tests on the network. This comes after they are incorporated into the Santo Domingo Metro system. During this stage, OPRET will validate key systems under real-world operating conditions. The focus will include the introduction of a new generation of braking systems. This phase complements the tests previously carried out by Alstom at its factory.

Passenger features and operating capacity

The new Metropolis trains are intended to improve passenger comfort and rail operations. Features include wider doors to speed up passenger flow. They also include advanced passenger information systems and LED lighting. Driver’s cabs are equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

In addition, the trains can operate in multiple-unit formations. This allows system capacity to increase according to demand. At the same time, Alstom is also working to improve operational compatibility between different train series. The aim is to optimize commercial operations.

Line 2C extension to Los Alcarrizos

The Line 2 Extension will connect María Montez Station with Los Alcarrizos. It is expected to improve mobility in Santo Domingo. Railway Supply reported on the Line 2C extension when it opened.

According to OPRET, the project will benefit more than 14 communities. It is expected to make transport easier and cut travel times. It is also expected to ease congestion on major roads.

The extension includes a 7.3-kilometer section with five stations. It runs between María Montez station and the future Los Alcarrizos station. It also includes a 900-meter underground section and a 6.45-kilometer elevated section.
